Role descriptions

Lead Developer

We’re looking for someone to join the founding team as a paid staff member, to lead our web development efforts. In this role, you would play a key part in a very important stage of our growing organisation, helping to:

  • Use Ruby on Rails to build our website as an engaging online platform for people to learn about our research.

  • Help develop new products, such as a career network or an interactive careers guide.

  • Be involved in other parts of 80,000 Hours

  • Manage volunteers, interns and contractors to work on tech and design.

  • There may also be the opportunity to work more broadly with the Centre for Effective Altruism, helping to foster new high-impact tech projects.

The role is highly flexible, and we’ll tailor it to your skills, interests and development aims. You would be part of a focused team of intelligent, enthusiastic, driven colleagues.

For this role we are interested in people with previous experience in web development, in particular Ruby on Rails, who deeply understand our aims, and are able to act with independence to build new products in a quickly changing organisation. The ideal candidate is familiar with design, and can handle both front and back-end development, potentially with support from contractors.

We are looking for someone to fill the Lead Developer role long-term. The performance of new hires is assessed after three months and again after six months before they are made permanent employees. Your starting salary would be between £18,000 and £40,000, depending on experience.

Tech and design internships

We’re looking for talented and enthusiastic people to volunteer with us full-time in Oxford. We run a Graduate Volunteer Scheme for those who want to stay with us for around eight to ten months, though we’ll also consider shorter placements. We can often provide accommodation, lunch and expenses to ensure that you’re not left out of pocket.

As a tech intern, you’d develop our website and work on developing new products, as well as have the opportunity get involved in other projects at the Centre for Effective Altruism. Our design intern would create eye-catching, clear visualisations of our ideas and the results of our research in the form of illustrations, infographics and, occasionally, videos. This intern would also need to ensure a professional and unified visual presence for 80,000 Hours, Giving What We Can and the Centre for Effective Altruism across our various channels (websites, social media, print and events).

We’re looking for hardworking individuals with a strong desire for personal development who are deeply interested in making the world a better place in an effective way. For more details on what we’re looking for, see here. In particular, for these roles we’re looking for experience of web development or design, combined with a strong desire to learn. Ideally you’ll have experience building new things rather than just following specs.

As a Graduate Volunteer, there are lots of different areas to work on, and there’s plenty of flexibility to adjust the role so it plays to your strengths and development aims. This is a great opportunity to improve your skills and gain much more responsibility than you would have in a typical entry-level job. We make it our responsibility to ensure your time here allows you to grow as much as possible, as well as just being lots of fun!
