Advising terms & privacy policy

Effective date: 31st May 2018

By applying for and using our Service, you accept the practices described in this policy.

Advising Disclaimer

We can give you information about your career options that we hope is useful; but how you choose to use this information is up to you. We don’t take responsibility for the outcomes of your choices.

Moreover, while the aim of our Service is to provide you with information about how to help the world, we don’t support courses of action that may be harmful to your physical or mental well being.

Our advisors are not professionally qualified career advisors. We recommend you use our advice alongside a professionally qualified advisor.

Please note that though we take reasonable precautions to keep your Personal Data private, we do not take responsibility for damages caused by data that is accidentally leaked or stolen.

Advising Privacy Policy addendum

This policy is an addendum to our general privacy policy, which specifically describes how we collect and process Personal Data in relation to the Service provided by our advising team.

When you apply for and use our Service, we may collect and process Personal Data and Special Category Data for the following purposes:

  • To provide and maintain our Service
  • To notify you about changes to our Service
  • To gather analysis or valuable information so that we can improve our Service
  • To detect, prevent and address technical issues
  • To assess the social impact of our programmes
  • To support decisions regarding who should be offered certain aspects of our Service (for example assistance from our in-person team)
  • To provide you with news, special offers and general information about other goods, services and events we think you may be interested in.

By applying for the Service and voluntarily providing this data, you consent to the processing of this data for the above purposes.

As a general rule we do not share the Personal Data we collect with anyone outside of the Centre For Effective Altruism, and, in accordance with “Privacy by Design” principles, we restrict access to Personal Data on a strict “need to know” basis.

At the start of the advising process you can request by email that your personal information (or certain parts of your information) be kept strictly confidential between you and your advisor. We will also attempt to accommodate other reasonable privacy requests.

Sometimes it’s helpful for us to let potential employers, industry experts or other potentially useful contacts know about your situation. When we do so we err on the side of caution and try to avoid telling them sensitive information. At the start of the advising process, you can request that your personal information be kept confidential between you and your advisor, or request that particular information not be shared. We will also attempt to accommodate other reasonable privacy requests.

If you apply for advising after being referred to our service by a third party, we may let this third party know whether your advising application was successful. This feedback helps our supporters ensure they are referring appropriate candidates to the service. If you do not want to us share the result of your application with your referrer, please state this on your application.

We will not share personal information or records of our conversations with anyone outside of our organisation (the Centre for Effective Altruism US and UK) without your consent.

We reserve the right to, in exceptional circumstances, to pass on personal information, where there is a legal or ‘duty of care’ imperative. Even in these circumstances, we would normally seek to explain this to the individual concerned.

Our Code of Conduct

The standards that our advisors aim to uphold are stated here.

Changes to this policy

We may update our this policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new policy on this page and updating the “effective date” at the top of this page.

If you are an active or previously active user of our Service, we may also notify you of substantive changes to this policy via email and/or a prominent notice on our Service, prior to the change becoming effective.
