About the guide

Our guide explains our most important ideas for building a successful career focused on tackling the world’s most pressing problems.

Your career is your biggest opportunity to make a difference

You have about 80,000 hours in your career: 40 hours per week, 50 weeks per year, for 40 years.

This makes your choice of career the most important ethical decision of your life.

Some careers have a much higher impact than others

With our guide, you may be able to find a path that has far more impact, while being just as fulfilling as the path you're currently on — or even more so.

About 80,000 Hours

80,000 Hours provides research and support to help students and graduates switch into careers that effectively tackle the world’s most pressing problems. We’re a nonprofit, and everything we provide is free.

80,000 Hours started in 2011 when our founders, Ben and Will, were about to graduate from Oxford, and were wondering what to do with their own careers. They wanted to make a difference, but the standard advice didn’t have much to say about which paths would be highest impact. So they started doing their own research, and eventually founded 80,000 Hours.

Their aim from the start has been to provide the advice they wish they’d had: in-depth, based on the best research available, and taking seriously the question of how to do the most good.

Since then, we’ve gone through Y Combinator, spoken to hundreds of experts, read all the relevant literature we can find, and conducted our own analyses of many career paths. Over 1,000 people have told us they’ve changed to higher-impact paths due to our advice. Read more.
