Help make one of the most influential podcasts on AI safety even better.

The 80,000 Hours Podcast features in-depth conversations and video essays about the world’s most pressing problems — particularly the safe development of transformative AI. Our episodes reach tens of thousands of listeners across YouTube and audio platforms, and employees in government and at leading AI companies regularly cite our episodes as useful to their thinking and decision-making.

To keep improving the quality and quantity of our episodes, we need a reliable, part-time editor to join our editing team, who can spend a lot of time in the timeline making cuts, cleaning audio, and delivering polished episodes at a steady pace.

Responsibilities

  • Edit long-form interview footage into polished, publishable episodes in DaVinci Resolve
  • Clean and balance audio, ensuring consistent quality across episodes
  • Implement editorial and technical cuts that improve pacing without losing depth, based on our content editors’ and producers’ suggestions
  • Deliver edited files to deadline, and flag issues early when they arise

About you

We’re looking for someone who ideally has:

  • Strong editing fundamentals: clean cuts, good pacing instincts, attention to audio quality
  • The ability to work at a steady pace and have good attention to detail when editing long-form content — this role will involve making a lot of cuts to make our episodes more engaging, concise and flow better, and we need someone who finds that satisfying rather than tedious
  • Familiarity with long-form podcast or interview content, or video essays
  • Proficiency in DaVinci Resolve — this is our primary editing tool, and we’re looking for someone who already knows it well, or will be able to familiarise themselves with it quickly
  • Reliability and clear communication
  • A good internet connection and their own editing setup capable of handling long-form video projects

It’s a bonus if you also have:

  • Experience with colour grading, motion graphics, title design, or audio mastering
  • Experience working in a team editing environment
  • (If you’re London-based) Camera operation and lighting experience, so you can help with direction in the studio
  • An interest in AI safety or the topics we cover, as having this could enable you to make more editorial decisions within the production process.

Role details

This will be a contracting role, paid by the hour.

Rate: Varies depending on skills, fit, and experience. Our range is approximately $40–74 USD per hour, but we may have some flexibility to go higher.

Hours: Starting at 10-15 hours per week, with the possibility of ramping up to full-time. We can guarantee at least 10 hours of work per week.
Other details will be specific to each contract.

If you’re interested in working with us but on a more ad-hoc basis, or if the rate above doesn’t work for you, we would still love to hear from you to discuss potential alternative arrangements.

Application process

To apply, please complete this application form with:

  • A CV or brief summary of your relevant experience
  • A showreel or 2–3 sample edits — ideally including at least one example of long-form or interview content
    • For example, you could upload your work privately to YouTube or frame.io, and share the link with us.

Applications will be evaluated on a rolling basis. Strong candidates will be invited to a short introductory call, followed by a paid work sample. Depending on the volume of applications we receive, you may not hear back from us if it doesn’t seem like a good fit.
